Advisory Council
Role
The Advisory Council is an important source of direction for and support to the Episcopal Foundation of Dallas. Having an independent, impartial, objective body of community leaders working with the Board of Trustees and staff helps build a secure, ongoing service program for the Foundation, in support of the Christian mission and the ministry of the Episcopal Diocese of Dallas. The responsibilities of the Advisory Council are delegated at the discretion of the Board of Trustees, and advisory councils have no legal authority and no liability. The goal of the Foundation's Advisory Council is to reap the benefits of the council's collective and individual thinking in order to add to the ultimate decision-making of the Board of Trustees and staff.
The Advisory Council's role is:
To communicate knowledge about the Foundation's mission and programs to the community, including parishes, missions, schools, organizations and individuals;
To communicate trends and perspectives within and outside the Diocese of Dallas affecting the Foundation's field of service; and,
To focus upon long-range, important issues pertaining to the Foundation within the Diocese of Dallas.
Membership
Members are elected by the Board of Trustees and serve on the Advisory Council for a period of three years, at which time they may be reelected. Council members may be listed on the Foundation's letterhead, website and other materials distributed by the Foundation. The Advisory Council is made up of individuals that meet one or more of the following criteria:
Past board members of the Foundation and/or long-time supporters of the Foundation and the efforts of the Diocese of Dallas;
Members reflecting a diversity of Episcopal churches, missions, schools, organizations and individuals;
Members representing the diverse geography of the Diocese of Dallas;
Members bringing a wealth of knowledge in a particular area of expertise, such as investment/financial management, nonprofit administration, grant programs, marketing, development, the Episcopal church, as well as other valuable fields.
Responsibilites
The purpose of the Advisory Council is to undertake meaningful and purposeful activities supporting the Episcopal Foundation of Dallas in areas of policy, planning, evaluation, public relations and fund raising. Responsibilities assigned to the Advisory Council may include any or all of the following, as directed by the Board of Trustees:
Understanding the Foundation's Mission and Programs: Members of the Advisory Council must clearly understand the Foundation's services in order to serve the Foundation effectively. Foundation staff will provide Council members with a background information packet on the organization. Members may request or may be asked to meet with key Trustees of the Board or staff members, as needed. In addition, members participate in one or two yearly meetings to hear updates on Foundation activities and news in the Diocese.
Program/Policy Planning: Advisory members may be asked to assist the Board of Trustees during the early stages of developing and implementing new program or policy goals. In addition, they may assist the Board in the recruitment and nomination of new members to the Advisory Council.
Providing Public Relations and Community Leadership: Advisory Council members are an effective tool for spreading the word about the Foundation's services. Members are asked to share wisdom, offer fresh perspective on programmatic issues, and serve as a community knowledge link with the Board of Trustees and staff. Members will assist in gaining input and support from representative Episcopal churches, missions, nonprofit organizations and individuals within the Diocese of Dallas. Members may also assist in identifying community resources and projects for consideration by the Foundation's grant making program.
Development Leadership: Advisory members may be asked to assist the Board of Trustees in the development and/or implementation of fund campaigns supporting the Foundation. Current campaigns underway include the Trustees Fund, an endowment to support the operations of the Foundation, and the Onward Capital Campaign, which supports All Saint's Camp in Lake Texoma and church plants for the Diocese of Dallas. Advisory members can assist in many ways, including strategic planning, influence on ways to leverage resources, community knowledge of vital resources and in-kind donations, and contribution of funds. In addition, Advisory members are a knowledgeable informational resource for churches and individuals on the investment of trusts and endowments with the Foundation.
Other Tasks: The Advisory Council may be asked to address other specific organizational needs, as determined by the Board of Trustees.
